Types of Anemometers?

  • Thrust anemometer

In these, the force applied by the wind on a surface, usually in the shape of a blade, is used to obtain a result, usually arbitrary or decided by the person who uses it. They are generally very imprecise but useful for basic wind readings.

  • Rotation anemometer

It is the most used model due to the simplicity of its operation. It has cups that when receiving the wind will rotate proportionally to the speed of the wind, thus giving the reading of the speed of the gas.

These anemometers are used for strong winds due to their robust composition , which is why they are very suitable for meteorologists and storm chasers.

  • Hot wire anemometer

Also known as a thermal anemometer, it is the one that has a platinum or nickel wire which is heated by a heated sensor that maintains a constant temperature, which when receiving the wind, cools and to maintain the same temperature the sensor exerts more energy.

The increase in energy from the sensor to keep the heat at the same temperature is directly related to the transfer of heat and, in turn, to the speed of the wind or gas.

  • Compression anemometer

It works using a Pitot tube, which is a pair of small tubes, one with a front and side hole that measures dynamic pressure and static pressure respectively, and the other tube with a hole on its side. The difference that is generated by the pressure in each type determines the speed of the wind.

This type of anemometer is used in airplanes, because it offers data on dynamic pressure, static and wind speed. Sonic anemometer.

This anemometer bases its calculations on the time it takes for a sound signal to cross a certain distance, usually 20cm. Knowing that the speed at which sound propagates will depend on the speed of the wind, this anemometer offers us high precision and it is easy to maintain it as it has no moving parts.

Although it is very good, it has a couple of disadvantages, because of its technology it is more expensive than most of the instruments mentioned and when calculating based on sound, its precision declines in the face of rain or snow.
