Anemometer

November 1, 2021

It is a meteorological instrument used in multiple sports, useful for industries, the agricultural sector benefits from its information and it is not all it is used for. The anemometer, to be a small device whose function is to measure the speed of the wind and other gaseous fluids, also offers many benefits.

It is one of the simplest to understand and easy-to-use measuring instruments , offering, in its vast majority of models, digital readings with which you can cover your need to know the force with which the wind is moving and take advantage of this information to your benefit.

What is an Anemometer?

The anemometer, also known as an anemograph, is a meteorological instrument whose task is to measure the average velocity of gaseous fluids , functioning as a tool for the development of multiple areas and activities.

In more basic terms, it is a device used for the measurement of the wind, but it is not the only thing that it can measure, since its capacity to calculate the speed covers all gaseous fluids.

The anemometer, due to the shape of its best known model, can be confused with a weather vane, but this is a mistake, since the vane only determines the direction of the wind and not the speed at which it moves.

What is an anemometer for?

As the anemometer measures the wind speed, its use is very useful for a myriad of tasks , such as fishing; the flight of aircraft, from the largest planes and helicopters, to the smallest drones; the Meteorology; the Agriculture; among other.

Any activity that requires the use of the wind or that requires a specific range of wind speed, will be benefited and facilitated with the use of an anemometer to specifically know the strength of the wind.

How does an anemometer work?

The most widely used type of anemometer could be said to be the cup type , which calculates the wind speed by counting the number of turns that are recorded, expressing them in meters per second (m / s).

Another type of anemometer is the hot-wire anemometer, which is used mainly in the event of very sudden speed changes. This type of anemometer consists of electrically heating a nickel or platinum wire, which when it receives gusts of wind generates changes in the temperature of the filament, thus providing the required data.

In this way we will have a reading, but if we want the data to be an average it will be necessary to expose the device for a recommended 10 minutes, to have a good calculation margin, since if you test the wind speed for a few seconds you may measure just a gust of air and not the constant stream that is important.

Uses of the Anemometer

We already know what this tool can be useful for, but now we will know in more detail in which areas it can be very important for the proper development of certain activities.

  • outdoor sports

As its function is to inform the wind speed, it is very advantageous to use it in activities such as golf, archery, mountaineering, fishing, among other sports. For many of these sports, knowing the wind speed can make the difference between a novice and a pro.

In sports such as golf or archery, knowing how strong the wind is helps a lot in calculating the shot, facilitating precision. While in mountaineering it helps to get an idea of the approaching weather, seeing the clouds and the direction and strength of the wind.

  • Fires

This tool is very useful when facing a fire, firefighters and rangers can make an estimate of the spread of the fire with respect to the wind that the area presents, thus helping to take measures to combat it.

  • Industries

Mainly for industries that generate pollution or waste, knowing the force of the wind helps to know the flow of pollution and in this way, how to control it to cause the least possible damage.

  • Aerial activities

Ballooning, kite flying, gliders, drones or parachutes are activities in which you need to know the constant speed of the wind to prepare for different situations .

  • farming

When you want to do sprinkler irrigation, it will be necessary to know the wind speed, to know if it meets the minimum necessary to carry out the activity. Or on the other hand, for the burning of crops, it will be necessary to know the wind data to avoid collateral damage and the time in which the fire will be consumed.

  • Meteorology

Measuring wind speed is one of the most important data for weather prediction, as it allows us to calculate things like the displacement of clouds or the strength of a tornado.

These are the most important and common uses of anemometers, but to close, all those activities that are developed by means of the wind or that the wind influences them, will receive the use of the anemometer as an advantage for the proper use of the task and the perfection of the activity.

Types of Anemometers?

Because the anemometer is a wind measurement instrument, which is a factor that affects or alters many activities, it was widely used and modified to change its operation while maintaining the same purpose. These are the most used and important types of anemometers on the market.

  • Thrust anemometer

In these, the force applied by the wind on a surface, usually in the shape of a blade, is used to obtain a result, usually arbitrary or decided by the person who uses it. They are generally very imprecise but useful for basic wind readings.

  • Rotation anemometer

It is the most used model due to the simplicity of its operation. It has cups that when receiving the wind will rotate proportionally to the speed of the wind, thus giving the reading of the speed of the gas.

These anemometers are used for strong winds due to their robust composition , which is why they are very suitable for meteorologists and storm chasers.

  • Hot wire anemometer

Also known as a thermal anemometer, it is the one that has a platinum or nickel wire which is heated by a heated sensor that maintains a constant temperature, which when receiving the wind, cools and to maintain the same temperature the sensor exerts more energy.

The increase in energy from the sensor to keep the heat at the same temperature is directly related to the transfer of heat and, in turn, to the speed of the wind or gas.

  • Compression anemometer

It works using a Pitot tube, which is a pair of small tubes, one with a front and side hole that measures dynamic pressure and static pressure respectively, and the other tube with a hole on its side. The difference that is generated by the pressure in each type determines the speed of the wind.

This type of anemometer is used in airplanes, because it offers data on dynamic pressure, static and wind speed. Sonic anemometer.

This anemometer bases its calculations on the time it takes for a sound signal to cross a certain distance, usually 20cm. Knowing that the speed at which sound propagates will depend on the speed of the wind, this anemometer offers us high precision and it is easy to maintain it as it has no moving parts.

Although it is very good, it has a couple of disadvantages, because of its technology it is more expensive than most of the instruments mentioned and when calculating based on sound, its precision declines in the face of rain or snow.

All the modifications that the original instrument received were in order to improve its performance or to add new measurements to the performance of the anemometer as we saw it, some give us an average of the wind speed, while others give us constant data of the wind speed. wind, all in favor of improving this tool so used today.

Characteristics of an Anemometer

The physical characteristics of the anemometer are very varied due to their presentations, but being the rotational one the most used, you should know that it has a blade on its body with paddles or cups at its ends and a torso similar to that of a fan, which is where the wind speed calculations are made.

While the other types offer drastic changes in the model and image of the original, their function has not changed, they all give measurements of the velocity of gaseous fluids, of course, some with more precision than others.

Its use is very practical, the data it offers is very useful and since it is not very expensive, anyone can enjoy its benefits, making this measurement instrument fundamental in the daily and professional life of many people.

Importance of the Anemometer

The importance of this tool is represented in the large number of areas or activities in which it can be used, although it does not have many uses, the measurement of wind speed represents a very useful data for multiple tasks, giving it an important place among the instruments measurement.

As the wind is a key factor in multiple situations or tasks , its measurement is an essential advantage and that thanks to this instrument we can know without much inconvenience and for a very accessible price.
