Asbestos Grating

What is an Asbestos Grating?

The asbestos grid is a thin metal net that is used as an assistant in the scientific laboratories of some universities, high schools and professional laboratories to protect equipment and conserve heat, distributing it evenly when heated through a lighter .

This instrument is made of resistant materials that provide thermal insulation, so that they are not damaged by severe exposure to heat. Although asbestos has been shown to be harmful to health, it is used very regularly in scientific laboratories, mainly to insulate equipment and to protect the elements from high temperatures.

What is an Asbestos Grating for?

The function of the asbestos grid is to distribute the heat when the lighter is used, thus preventing the fire from reaching the containers directly, deteriorating or destroying them.

This mesh or grid is placed on a ring on top of a universal support that holds the flasks, beakers and other containers, whether made of glass or porcelain, that will be used to carry out any type of scientific experiment or test.

Although it is a simple tool, it is completely necessary in any laboratory.

How does an Asbestos Grating work?

To make use of this useful tool, the procedure is very simple, you will only need to have the necessary materials: a bunsen burner, a laboratory tripod and an asbestos grid.

You should start by placing the grid on the tripod, the lighter lit under it and on the grid place the glass or porcelain container with which you are going to work.

The function that the grid will fulfill will be to distribute the heat throughout the mesh, preventing the flame from reaching the container directly and overheating the glass, causing it to fracture. The fire manages to focus on the asbestos ring and not on what it wants to heat up.

This way you will be able to conserve and make good use of the materials and at the same time you will not run any type of risks that harm your health.

Uses of an Asbestos Grating?

To use an asbestos grid in your laboratory you will need two essential utensils, a lighter, a tripod and of course the grid. This way you can efficiently and safely hold and heat any glass object that is going to be subjected to an experiment.

You must bear in mind that glass containers should never be heated directly over a fire flame, this type of grids are a good protector, since they make the heat spread throughout the surface avoiding overheating and consequently the rupture of packaging.

For better results and greater security you must make sure to fold the edges of the mesh, in this way the heat will be better spread throughout the area.

Types of Asbestos Grating

In the market today you can get two types of grids, depending on the procedure you want to carry out, you can choose the one you want both of them fulfill their function perfectly.

  • Asbestos grating with ceramic base

It has a ceramic base in the center and is generally used when you need to perform an advanced science experiment on a ring stand, dispersing the heat in a more balanced way.

  • Asbestos grating

This is simpler and more widely used, it only has an asbestos base, but it does not stop being fully functional.

Both are made of metal and designed to transmit heat efficiently; only that the ceramic center one does it more evenly. It is also trapped under high pressure and this prevents it from deteriorating and peeling.

Characteristics of an Asbestos Grating

The asbestos grating is designed with electro-welded, corrosion-resistant steel wires or nichrome wire, which is a galvanized iron wire, and by a thin sheet of asbestos or asbestos, which is a flexible material that can separate into small and fine fibers that intertwine between the grid, able to withstand high temperatures.

It is quadrangular in shape, approximately 125 × 125 mm, with an asbestos or ceramic covering in the center, as the case may be, approximately 80 mm, in order to achieve the best heat distribution throughout the sheet. You will notice that its edges are bent inwards, this is to facilitate its use, avoid  deterioration and also reduce any type of risk due to the edges that stand out.

It is non-combustible, that is, it cannot be burned, it is resistant to traction, it resists when it is exposed to two forces, it is impossible to expand or stretch it and therefore it is very resistant to wear.

Importance of an Asbestos Grating

It is important to know that when handling an asbestos grating, you must take measures so that you do not expose your body to serious risks such as burns, because the materials are exposed to high concentrations of heat .

Also keep in mind that the containers must have flat bottoms, in this way you will guarantee that they maintain stability when placing them on the metal rack.

When a glass container is placed directly on a hot burner, the parts that come into contact with the burner get much hotter than the parts that don’t. This causes stress that ends up causing the glass to break, for this reason it is important to use an asbestos screen.
