Baseless ball

In laboratories, implements of various forms and made of different materials are used. Each one has a specific function within the laboratory and its shape and design depend on it. The bottles without a base or distillation flask are one of those elements, their base is round, so it requires a support to keep it firm, but it is necessary to heat some substances evenly.

What is it?

The bottomless flask, distillation flask or Florentine flask is part of the glassware. It is a bottle with a long neck and a spherical body. It is thus designed to achieve uniform heating of substances. It is made of glass or special plastic.

Its rounded base also allows the contents to be shaken or stirred without spilling any substance out of the container as a precaution. This feature also makes it susceptible to spillage if you don’t have a proper foundation.

Sometimes it has a lateral detachment tube attached to the neck. This allows the exit of vapors during the distillation to take them to the condenser.

How is it used?

To anchor the ball without a base, a lead or metal weight is usually placed on the outside. For heating it, the use of a ring is recommended, which must be held by a double nut or a similar safety handle since its function is to keep it on the Bunsen burner to heat the content. In these cases, a gauze wire mesh is also usually placed between the ball and the hoop.

A universal support can also be used to hold the balloon, in these cases it is held with a handle for test tubes, in this way, the balloon is held by its neck.

Due to its characteristics, the loss of liquid by stirring or evaporation is avoided. The narrow neck allows it to be sealed with a frosted plug or hydrophobic cotton.

It is usually used instead of the beaker when a liquid medium is obtained that needs to be constantly stirred without spilling its contents. It is also recommended to work with violent chemical reactions.

In biology it is used to prepare culture broths since it can be easily isolated with a stopper.

It is also used to heat substances to high temperatures. For a lower temperature it is recommended to use the Erlenmeyer flask.

Characteristics of the distillation flask or flask

The balls without base are made of borosilicate glass and, depending on the use to which they will be used, they can have different thicknesses.

They have a spherical base and a long, cylindrical neck. Some have side tubes that allow the vapors to escape during a distillation process.

Cautions when using the distillation flask

  • If it is to be used for a distillation process, we must ensure that the connections are sealed. Vapors escaping on contact with the lighter can cause accidents.
  • You should not let the balloon distill dry, the residue in the mixture may contain flammable peroxides, or the glass of the balloon may heat up until it breaks.
  • It is a tool that, due to its base, is very sensitive to turning over and spilling liquids or breaking. Always make sure you have a suitable foundation on hand.
