The concept of datalogger is somewhat broad, it is applied to those equipments that serve to record data. However, dataloggers are usually characterized by being autonomous devices , they store the data in an internal memory so that it is later downloadable. Said memories are commonly EEPROM, electrical ROM memories that can be read in an unlimited way and is reprogrammable, although not in an unlimited way.

How does a Datalogger work?

When we talk about dataloggers we are not referring to a standard model that works in a certain way. These, for their use, must be programmed and the way to do it depends on the model , although you should not worry, they come with their corresponding instructions. Then, you just have to place it in the place where you will carry out the measurement and, subsequently, you will export the data.

Uses of the Datalogger

As I mentioned earlier, dataloggers are highly used in the industrial sector. This is due to the demands in it, on the control of the merchandise to ensure quality. Due to the different data that it can record, it is extremely useful in various areas, the most common in which you can find it are:

  • Meteorology

To measure temperature, humidity, wind speed and more. It is used both in stations and in investigations. Especially useful in harsh climates as they work without supervision.

  • Vehicles

Many loggers use channels to measure speed, weight, even accelerometers. In automobiles, the engine controller records engine data. In airplanes there is a so-called “black box” to record as much data as possible in case of accidents. And data loggers are used on multi-ton ships as well.

  • Research

Just as it is used in meteorological research, it is also common to find it in laboratories and research with fauna.

In general, the use of the datalogger is quite widespread in various sectors and there are even people who use them in their personal projects, since there is currently a wide range of models, many of them being economically accessible. Dataloggers record physical properties themselves, hence their multiple uses.

Types of Datalogger

There are different models of datalogger depending on what you need to record. There are as many types as working conditions and what you want to measure. They are also differentiated by technical details such as the communication interface, which is one of the most relevant features.

By communication interface there are these three types:

  • USB
  • WIFI (depends on modem, which can be a disadvantage in some cases)
  • Waves of various frequencies (radio, Bluetooth, among others)

Another important point to keep in mind is the measurement intervals , since, depending on what you are going to work on, you will need a greater or lesser time range between them. And of course there are one-channel and multi-channel ones, to record different variables. The size and material of it are relevant depending on the conditions in which you will use it, for example, if you ae going to use it in water, etc.

Dataloggers, as you have observed, vary among themselves and therefore, as long as they maintain their main function of recording data through sensors, they can technically be classified as one. But among its main characteristics the following can be highlighted:

There are dataloggers that work with web servers, the benefit of this is being able to verify the data remotely. Thanks to technological advances, there are more and more complex data loggers, capable of measuring more variables and with greater functionalities. But if something remains the defining characteristic, it is its autonomy, with respect to other data collection tools.

Importance of the Datalogger

The relevance of an instrument like the datalogger speaks for itself. It is not surprising that it is required in various fields, because the extent of use makes it a highly needed item in many fields. Industries must maintain a regulation in their production process, temperature, humidity, weight and other qualities must be controlled and for this they need these equipments that do it with precision.

Not only this sector is benefited. Measuring the pH of water, making meteorological records, measuring the pressure and acceleration of a falling object, can also be achieved with this great instrument. The datalogger has both practical uses for research.
