The digital caliper is a highly used measuring instrument in the industrial field. The history of the non-digital instrument dates back to the 6th century BC. Similar models have been found in ancient China and its use dates from the Greeks to the Romans. Digital entered the market in 1982 as a result of the development of meteorological sciences.

Metrology is called the study of the measurement of quantities , which advocates the continuous improvement and evolution of measurement instruments to obtain greater comfort of use and better precision. The digital caliper is also known as the vernier caliper and is used to measure the length or inside and outside diameters.

What is the Digital Calibrator?

The digital caliper measures lengths with great accuracy . A length is the straight extension of a body. To measure it, the caliper uses a kind of “ruler” with measurements on its lower side, in centimeters and millimeters. While in the upper one it has measurements in inches and fractions of inches. This “ruler” has clamps in the manner of keys with for measuring exteriors or interiors.

The classic calipers, apart from the measurements that it has in the main “ruler”, also have two verniers, located at the top and bottom respectively. The verniers are auxiliary scales; they basically divide the main rule allowing more exact measurements to be made.

The digitalis changed the verniers for screens and buttons to control their configuration. This makes the measurement even more precise since it does not depend on human calculation but is carried out automatically when handling the calibrator. These present the measurement in different scales, either millimeters, inches or whatever is available in their configuration.

What is a Digital Calibrator for?

As a measuring instrument, the caliper is one of the most accurate . Due to its size, the lengths it measures are small. These can be internal, external or deep thanks to the depth gauge that it has at the bottom of it. Which is a small rod of gauge material.

The precision of a calibrator is one tenth of a millimeter, although digital ones reach an accuracy of one fiftieth of a millimeter . Due to this, it is highly used in the manufacture of instruments, especially those that need exact measurements without margin of error for its proper functioning.

How the Digital Calibrator works

The digital caliper will be very easy to use. It usually has at least three buttons that facilitate its operation.

  • One ON / OFF button: to turn on and off
  • Another button “0” (Zero): that clears the previous measurement and restarts the equipment
  • And a third button that allows you to choose between measuring in gauges or inches

To measure the exterior, you will only have to place the piece between the largest jaws, which are at the bottom of the caliper. As the gauge is digital, it will automatically tell you the measurement.

To measure the interior, use the smallest jaws, located at the top. Just place the object to be measured between them, until they stop and that’s it.

In defining the depth, make use of the needle or bar for measurements, which is at the right end of the caliper.

Uses of a Digital Caliper

This instrument is widely used in the industrial sector , especially to manufacture others. In fact they even depend on their length for their use. For example screws, gears, machinery parts, medical instruments, and all the small parts that make up the mechanisms of the instruments you use need this kind of precision in their measurements.

Types of Digital Caliper

The other difference is between classic and digital calipers , that is, based on precision. The classic calipers depend on their verniers to determine the measurement with precision, of these there are two types, the universal ones and those with a clock, the latter are easier to read but have the disadvantage of not being able to measure in inches. Of the three, the most accurate are the digital ones.

How do you use a Digital Caliper?

The first step to use your digital caliper is to turn it on, then you must choose if you are going to measure in millimeters or inches (it is as simple as pressing the button that indicates the change). Then you have to close the jaws and zero the calibrator screen , this has a button that indicates “zero” for it and is ready to measure what you want.

Characteristics of a Digital Calibrator

At the first moment of having a caliper in your hands, you may feel confused when seeing all the parts that compose it; but there is nothing to be afraid of because the calibrator is an instrument that is easy to learn to use and the first thing to do is to know all its characteristics.

  • Bottom jaws: measuring external parts of an object
  • Upper jaws or ears: measurement of the inside of an object
  • Rod: located at the back it sticks out like a thin piece, it is used to measure depths.
  • Display: Indicates the measurement automatically and has on, off and scale change switches.
  • Locking screw: used to fix the position of the jaws once you have the object to be measured.

By dispensing with verniers, digital calipers are not as complex to use as they only have to locate the object to be measured on the caliper. Making it really easy to use . The parts used to measure the object are the jaws and the rod; and what the measurement indicates is the screen.

Importance of the Digital Caliper

The advantages of the digital caliper are quite accurate, it is much more convenient to use, and it is also more accurate. Making it superior to the previous models, in fact some even have USB ports for the extraction of the measured data and its subsequent storage, helping to keep a record of it.

The main disadvantage of the digital caliper is its costs, well above that of classic calipers. This calibrator however, is indispensable for many areas of the industry ; In many cases a classic caliper has a sufficient degree of precision, but for those who need accuracy the digital caliper is the best option.
