Erlenmeyer flask

In a laboratory some instruments are almost essential, the Erlenmeyer flask is one of them. It is a glass bottle used to prepare distillation assemblies, make mixtures, react substances that require heating and to contain liquids.

What is it?

It is a glass container widely used in physics and chemistry laboratories. It is also known as an extreme chemical synthesis flask. It was created by the chemist Emil Erlenmeyer in 1861.

It is a conical shaped bottle with a round base. In the upper area, a mouth with a narrow neck can be seen. It is a graduated flask that indicates a certain volume.

What is it for?

It is ideal for mixing by stirring and for the controlled evaporation of liquids. Its narrow opening allows the use of frosted plugs or hydrophobic cottons.

It is used instead of the beaker when a liquid must be constantly stirred without risk of spilling its contents or when working with violent chemical reactions.

It can also be used to heat substances to moderately high temperatures.

It is not used for the measurement of liquids because its measurements are inaccurate.

In the field of microbiology it is used to prepare culture broths, since it can be easily covered with a hydrophobic cotton plug.

How is it used?

  • To anchor it to a place, a lead or metal weight is placed on the outside.
  • To heat it, it is held by placing a metallic cloth between the flask and the ring or tripod.
  • It can be attached to the universal holder by holding it by the neck with a test tube holder.

Advantages of its use

  • It is safer than a beaker. Its design avoids losses of the substance or solution due to stirring or evaporation.
  • It can be used to constantly stir solutions.
  • It can be easily isolated using a frosted cap or a hydrophobic cotton.
