Filter paper, how to choose the right and cheapest one?

The filter paper is that the paper used in the coffee to brew coffee, there actually is used as an instrument to perform various processes of purification or separation of elements in substances. This paper is used to carry out the filtration process, a purification method that has been used for a long time and that is applicable in a large number of areas, from everyday life to applications in industrial or scientific laboratories.

In this way, filter paper is widely used when wanting to clean water of impurities, but the use of this type of paper goes far beyond daily or domestic uses, having several applications within the laboratory, being used with all kinds of substances.

Depending on its texture, the type of paper and its diameter, they can be used for different uses. Also, the components from which they are made make it a resistant paper so that it can allow the solution to pass through and separate it from insoluble substances.

What is filter paper?

As its name implies, it is a type of paper that is specially made to carry out filtering work. They are usually papers with a circular shape that are made of cellulose and its derivatives , in the same way as the rest of the fabrics and papers.

In this way, being a membrane found in cells of plant origin, this role is usually done by means of cellulose that is extracted from wood .

As we mentioned before, this type of paper usually has many uses, but they are used very frequently within laboratories and have a direct connection with the use of a funnel, in which they place the filter paper to do the filtration work.

This paper usually has a white color and is a bit opaque, having a diameter and a size that can vary from the type of paper and the use that will be given to the paper.

The filtration process consists of separating solid elements from a liquid solution ; being able to be large elements or elements that we cannot see with the naked eye. That is why this paper is specially made to be resistant to certain substances, so that the paper does not come apart in the same way that it happens with other papers when they are in contact with liquids.

In this way, it has to be strong enough so that it can withstand the passage of liquid solutions through it at all times while separating it from solid elements, retaining them and supporting the weight that these can add to the passage of water.

What is filter paper used for?

At this point it is clear that it is used to carry out filtering work, but we can find different types of filtering. For example, gravity filtration that consists of pouring a liquid that you want to filter; or vacuum filtration , in which the liquid to be filtered is sucked under vacuum pressure. In both cases filter paper is used.

It is also widely used with funnels, as we mentioned earlier, even though the funnels already have a design that enables filtration. This is because the use of filter paper adds more reliability to the filtration process .

What uses does it have?

If we are more specific in the uses that filter paper can have, we can find a large number of uses, which can range from making coffee at home to filtering a solution in a professional laboratory . For example, it is used and important in qualitative analysis , since it is used to identify the particles that make up a certain substance.

This paper is also used in electrophoresis , which is a procedure that consists of separating molecules through a filter under specific conditions. Another use of this paper is in the realization of the gravimetric analysis also the filter paper is used, which consists of determining what is the proportion of an element.

There are many laboratory procedures in which it is used, especially in the case of analytical chemistry, although it is also often used to place solid samples.

Within the industrial sector, it is also very common to use this type of paper, being able to use the different types of filter paper, both for the production of products or even as part of the product. For example, even cars use filters to process oil. Actually, it is a tool that has many uses.

Taking these details into account, it is very important to know very well the use that each of the measuring instruments that are frequently used can have, so that better results can be obtained when carrying out research or measurement work.

Different types of filter paper

As we mentioned earlier, nowadays you can find different types of filter paper , so it is important to bear in mind that the same type of filter paper is not always used; Although common filter paper can be used for many applications, there are certain substances that need a special surface in order to be properly filtered.

These are some of the different types of filter paper that are used today:

  • Qualitative filter paper : it is a fairly resistant type of paper that can perceive substances that have a pH of 0 to 12 and 120 ° C. It is usually a paper that is used in qualitative analysis. It offers a high filtration speed and is made from cellulose and cotton derivatives.
  • Quantitative filter paper : a type of filter paper that is made from cellulose and cotton fibers. It is a type of paper used to filter substances that require that the paper does not have any of its elements among the components.
  • Fiber filter paper: This paper is special because it is made of fiberglass or quartz, which makes it quite resistant to high temperatures. It is usually necessary to be able to carry out some filtration procedures that work with substances at high temperatures.
  • Chromatographic Filter Paper – A type of paper used in conducting chromatography. The truth is that there are different ways of doing chromatography, but one of the most used is using this filter paper, which has very useful characteristics such as having a high absorption of liquids.

Those are just the main types, but there are also other types of filter paper that have uses beyond just laboratory use, such as kitchen filters, air filters, oil filters , etc.

As you can see, the uses that can be given are very extensive and varied, which is why it is possible to find different types of papers that are responsible for adjusting to the specific needs that may be had.

Main characteristics of filter paper

It is clear that depending on the type of filter paper, its characteristics may change, both in the materials, in its composition, in its size, etc .; however, there are certain characteristics that these papers have to share in order to carry out the filtration work.

Among the main characteristics of filter paper we can highlight the following:

  • Porosity : Porosity is a vital element on the surface of filter paper. It must have a good volume and voids that allow the liquid to filter while retaining the solids. Normally the diameter of the pores varies depending on the type of filter paper and its applications.
  • Dimensions : the size of the filter paper can also vary greatly depending on what it is used for. However, the normal measurement that they usually have is 10 cm2 and a weight that can range from 75 to 130 g / m2
  • Thermal resistance : it is generally the papers made of fiberglass that have the highest thermal resistance, although the truth is that all types of filter paper must have good thermal resistance so that they can be used with different substances.
  • Chemical resistance : it should be borne in mind that filter papers do not resist the impregnation of a substance, so they have to be waterproof in order for them to function properly. Likewise, they must have a good level of resistance to erosion and corrosion that may be caused during the filtering process.
  • Semi-permeability : this factor is key during the time of filtering, since it determines the quality, maintains the integrity of the filter paper and allows the liquid to pass through the material.

It is important to know the specific characteristics of this paper that you will be working with in order to use it properly and ensure that the filtering process is effective.
