Filtration funnel

November 1, 2021

The filter funnel is a laboratory instrument that allows solids and other substances of different density to be separated from a liquid mixture.

What is it?

It is an instrument used to transfer liquids from one container to another, preventing the substance to be transferred from spilling. It is also used to separate solids from liquids through a process known as filtration.

There are several types of filter funnels. They generally vary in size depending on the volume of suspension to be filtered. They are made of plastic for general use and glass for filtering solvents that can react with glass.

The conical shape is the most common, it is also known as the German shape.

The diameters range between 4 and 15 cm. In some cases, the stem may end in a ground glass joint.

There are variants of the common model. They may have a different stem length or the shape of the funnel body may vary.

There are some models made of polyethylene or galvanized steel and with a brass or plastic mesh filter. These are used in automobiles and in the workshop, to filter waste fuel, coolant and oil.

What is it for?

It is used to transfer substances from one container to another reducing the risk of spillage.

They are also used to filter mixtures of liquids and solids.

How is it used?

To perform a filtration, a piece of filter paper must be cut in the shape of a disk, it is folded into a cone shape and it is placed in the funnel.

Then, the suspension of solids and liquids is poured on the paper that is in the funnel. Solid particles are too large to pass through the filter and remain on the paper, while small liquid molecules can pass through the filter paper into the container under the funnel.

The filter paper can only be used once.

If we only require the liquid, the paper is discarded. If you also require the solid part, you can separate the solid residue from the paper.

If the paper filter has small pores, the molecules of non-polar liquids that form long chains, such as oil, can clog it.

In the United States, the sale of these funnels has been limited and a special permit is required to acquire them, since they can be used in the manufacture of drugs.

Born and raised in Brussels in an English family, I have always lived in a multicultural environment. After several work experiences in marketing and communication, I came to Smart Water Magazine, which I describe as the most exciting challenge of my career.
I am a person with great restlessness and curiosity to learn, discover what I do not know, as well as reinvent myself daily, someone who is curious about life and wants to know. I enjoy sharing knowledge.
This is my personal project but I also collaborate in other blogs, it is the case, the most important web on water currently exists in the US, if you are interested you can read my articles here.
