You’ve probably heard about the bunsen burner and maybe even worked with it in school labs. If so, you are already familiar with laboratory lighters. This time I’ll tell you about the Fisher lighter, also known as the meker-fisher lighter.

One of the outstanding aspects of this lighter is that it has a great range and temperature stability, necessary to develop procedures such as the sterilization of materials. That is why it is important to know it, because you can avoid accidents and be attentive when handling it.

What is the Fisher Lighter?

Lighters are instruments that create fire from gas or fuel , in the laboratory they are used to heat, sterilize or ignite reagents and solutions. The most used lighters are the Bunsen burner , the Alcohol burner , the teclu burner and the Fisher burner . Each of these, despite looking similar, are used for different functions.

The Fisher lighter is made up of a vertical tube that has a base where it connects to the gas inlet and also serves as a support. It has two ways of regulating the fire , through a key that allows the passage of gas and through holes in the tube, which provide the entry of oxygen, with a mobile ring to control the passage of this.

In these aspects, the Fisher lighter is practically the same as the bunsen burner , the main difference is that in the head of the lighter we find a sieve plate . This is a metal plate with holes covering its entire surface as if it were a mesh, but it is distant from it in the separation between the holes, which is more marked on the plate.

What is the Fisher Lighter for?

Despite its similarity to the bunsen burner, the Fisher burner has a specific utility. And it is that, although there seems to be no difference, the incorporation of the sieve plate completely changes the results of the lighter. Well, it allows generating not one flame but many flames, as many as there are holes in the plate.

Very well, instead of one flame, several come out, and what about this? Basically this allows a more uniform distribution of heat or temperature. These qualities make your flame wider and cover larger volumes.

Thanks to its qualities, this lighter is used in certain procedures that require a more uniform flame. One of them is microbiological culture, a method regularly used in the areas of biology and medicine, which consists in achieving the multiplication of bacteria; this in order to study them. The burner is used to prepare the culture media.

Another widespread use is that of sterilization, which is the method of removing microbes from the surfaces of objects. For this, it is necessary to apply the flame, one that can heat the surface of the instrument with greater comfort and accessibility. So when applying sterilization in the laboratory, the Fisher lighter is usually the favorite.

This lighter is used especially for containers in the sterilization process. As such there are no different types themselves, with other functions; since that’s what bunsen and teclu type lighters are for that take care of other areas. However, one feature that you must pay attention to to distinguish one Fisher lighter from another is its plate .

The size of the lighter burner and the size of the tube vary the most. The larger the burner, the greater the area to be covered. But you must bear in mind that the fuel consumption will also be greater to maintain the stability of the flame and its proper distribution.

Compared to the bunsen burner whose flame reaches about 1500 ° C or the teclu burner which is even higher, the flame of the Fisher burner is lower in temperature.

However, it is thanks to the extension of its burner that this lighter allows a more efficient distribution of heat. When using the Fisher lighter you only have to control the gas and air valves to regulate the intensity of the heat, making it simple and practical to use.

Importance of the Fisher Lighter

The Fisher lighter is used more for other laboratory instruments than for substances, this for their sterilization. The sterilization process requires high temperatures to eliminate microbes, bacteria and other microorganisms that may remain on the objects. In addition to eliminating traces of the previous substances with which the material was in contact.
