The tape measure , also known as a tape measure or simply a meter , is a tool used to make measurements thanks to a flexible graduated tape, which can be rolled up for easy storage and transport.

Thanks to its characteristics, it can be used on straight and curved surfaces alike, regardless of whether they are vertical, horizontal or diagonal.

Uses of the tape measure

The tape measure is useful in various situations, being necessary in construction, carpentry, sewing, plumbing and other areas that require taking measurements .

With the tape measure you can obtain quick measurements and (depending on the type) deal with surfaces with different shapes to calculate height, width, diameter , etc.

It can be seen in the textile industry, in fashion, in masonry, also in handicraft workshops of various kinds; which means that it is a very versatile and useful tool, being even used in the daily life of homes sometimes, to measure the height of children or to decorate the house.

Parts of the tape measure

The tape measure is made up of 4 parts: the tape, the safety, the lip or end and the casing.


The tape is the one in charge of carrying out the measurement; It is marked with meters, centimeters and millimeters , although it also has a graduation in inches (Located on the opposite side of centimeters), being used with the metric system and English measurements alike. The tapes usually have a length of between 1.5 to 20 meters, depending on what it will be applied for; It can also have other features.


The safety is a button that moves from front to back ; It is used when the tape is being used, so that it remains firm and does not know how to keep itself, working as a brake for it.

Lip or end

The lip or end is at the end of the tape measure , it is used to fix it to the surface to be measured (especially when it is measured vertically or diagonally).


Lastly, the casing is the structure of the tape measure, being compact and generally with a square shape and curved edges ; it also usually includes its own rope to adjust to the wrist and facilitate its handling.

Types of tape measure

Carpenter or folding tape

The structure of this tape measure is unique in its kind, it is made up of various segments of 20 centimeters each, which are folded like a zig-zag for storage. It does not have insurance or casing because it does not stretch like others; likewise, it has pieces at each joint to ensure that it can be kept straight.

This tape measure handles measurements of up to 3 meters , it is made of nylon or fiberglass and as its name indicates, it is used in carpentry; although it is also very useful in construction, thanks to the fact that it is rigid and must not unroll.

Sewing tape

Being also part of the tape measure, the sewing tape has only the part of the tape, being in this case totally flexible and adaptable to any surface.

These tapes are made of fabric or plastic , and have a length of 1.5 meters (being the shortest since no longer measurements are required). The measurements are marked on both sides, so that either of them can be used.

It is used in haute couture, dressmaking, and even in the medical field, being the ideal tool to measure the diameter of the abdominal perimeter of patients; while in sewing it can be used to make custom garments and for industrial sizes.

Conventional tape measure

This has all the aforementioned parts, having a tape made of steel since it is the only material with the necessary rigidity and traction. At present you can also find fiberglass tape measurers, somewhat lighter but that fulfill the same purpose.

They are usually centimeter and even millimeter tapes, with each of these measurements marked with lines and numbers, depending on how large they are. Mostly they can be seen with marks every 10 centimeters when used for large measurements mostly.

Its measurements can vary between 5 and 20 meters , offering an ideal range for masonry and construction (it is even known as mason tape in some places). They stand out for being able to be used vertically or diagonally without the need for a support , being totally rigid once the insurance is placed.

How to use a tape measure?

The first step in using the tape measure is to fix the end at the starting point of the object to be measured, taking the rest of the tape measure with you to the end point, spreading the tape in the process.

Once this is done, you must fix the safety when you are in the place of the measurement you want to obtain, proceeding to read the length closest to the case.

To measure vertically, you must place the tape measure on the floor and stretch its tape until it reaches the desired point; placing the safety to mark the height obtained. When making a measurement with this method, you must add the height of the tape measure itself, which is indicated on the case. You can also use this method without having to measure from the floor, it depends on what you want to measure.

When you need to make a measurement with a greater scope than the tape of the tape measure, you can use it to measure by marking the point to which it reaches , to go on to roll it up and continue measuring from the point you marked previously, adding the two measurements at the end to get the final result.

It should be noted that you must always make sure that the tape is completely straight and taut , otherwise you can get wrong results.
