Gas meter, what is it and where to buy it?

November 2, 2021

The gas meter is a specialized device that measures the flow and volume of common combustible gases in the home, such as natural gas and propane. Gas measurement is one of the most difficult concepts, since accuracy is affected by two fundamental factors: fuel pressure and fuel temperature.

Meters are indispensable devices to control the use of gas in an establishment. They also help manage the amount of energy consumed, for example from a heater. Especially in the seasons where they are most used, such as winter. With one of these instruments it is possible to know what is the amount per day that they dispatch to keep the home warm.

In the next article we will talk about what a gas meter is, how they work, and how they should be read. Stay with us because this information is vitally important in order to save energy and fuel at home. Also to find out if there is a dangerous leak due to the sudden downturn of an appliance.

What is a gas meter?

A gas meter, also known as a gas meter, is an instrument used for measurements and determinations of the amounts of gas that are consumed in a given time frame.

They are fundamental pieces in the feeding of the gas supply in homes, but they also count as a laboratory instrument where some test with the fuel is involved.

Usually the device is housed in the gas distribution system to measure the spent fuel and in a certain period it gives a billing of the consumption. Which is represented through cubic meters.

They work in a similar way to water meters that are installed in drinking water lines. Although here it is directly installed in a pipeline with supplies and interior facilities to give gas.

In general, it is usually the device that accompanies kitchens, stoves, heaters and similar that consume some of the most common types of gases.

Gas meter features

In the next section we will talk about the main characteristics of a gas meter so that you have an idea of the type of system that is housed in the distribution of flammable fuel.

  • A gas meter is an accurate reading device whose purpose is to inform about energy consumption. They come in a variety of styles: digital and standard.
  • To be able to detect the gas flow, the meters are manufactured with mechanical or electronic devices so that the amount passing through the conductors is analyzed.
  • Not all meters are approved, they must first pass a mandatory verification according to the ordinances of a specific state or company. After being installed, they must also be evaluated from time to time since they must be subjected to a calibration.
  • As we mentioned before, a gas measurement is not entirely accurate . Sometimes it may, and it may not. It depends a lot on the pressure and temperature factors to which they are exposed.

Types of gas meters

There is more than one type of gas meter and here we will mention what are the various volumetric on the market. However, depending on their technology and design, they all have the function of detecting the type of gas and the variety in the flows.

Diaphragm Gas Meter

It is a meter that has four chambers to form a unit that is divided by a diaphragm in a deformable wall. It is connected via a rotating piston and when the gas flow passes through the meter, it begins to perform calculations once the volume of each measuring chamber is known.

Rotary gas meter

The rotary gas meter has two impellers that rotate in front of each other in a housing unit. They are positioned in such a way that the cross sections are perpendicular to the axis of rotation. Measure the amount of gas once the volume of the chamber is known.

This is due to the fact that gas molecules pass through the meter continuously. In addition to the above considerations, it is worth noting that a silencer can be added to avoid precision errors during keystrokes in calibrations.

Turbine gas meter

It is a turbine wheel system with an extrusion section and a housing unit sealed by the main components of each meter. Once the gas flows through the duct, the wheel begins to turn. The gas volume is known according to the speed of the turbine shaft.

How to read a gas meter?

The most common problem when using a gas meter is reading. It is usually a headache for people. Taking that nightmare into account, here we will explain how the gas flow through a meter should be measured . Pay attention, because this information will help you save energy.

  • Electric meter . An electric meter is one of the many forms that a gas meter can come in. The basic unit with which the volumes are referenced are expressed in watts. Once a thousand watts are reached they are called kilowatts. In order to read one of these artifacts it is necessary to write down the numbers shown on the dials from right to left.
  • Gas meter . The gas meter used to be the most common artifact until it was displaced by the digital one. Here the measurement is done by cubic feet (MCF or CCF). These devices come installed to a meter in the gas lines and the distribution point of the house. Each time the dial makes a full revolution, the dot advances one digit. Unlike the previous one, cubic numbers are read from left to right.
  • Digital meter. They are the easiest to read as they come with built-in digital displays instead of dials. They can be programmed to give a reading in a certain period, such as month by month and is expressed in energy units.

Uses of the gas meter

The gas meter has two fundamental uses that, if you have paid attention to the article, you will have noticed. The first is for a home’s combustible gas systems. The second is for platforms where gases are used, such as offshore drilling .
