Glass rod

The glass rod, stirring rod or baguette is a solid glass cylinder that is used in laboratories to mix and dissolve substances, in order to homogenize them. The most common are six millimeters in diameter and up to 400 mm long.

What is it?

It is an instrument used in chemistry and biology laboratories to stir mixtures, this in order to homogenize the mixture and unite chemicals, liquids and solids. It is a solid glass cylinder of standard diameter and length.

Features and use

Among the characteristics of these rods we have:

  • They can be 5 to 7 millimeters in diameter.
  • In length they can range from 20 to 50 centimeters long.
  • They can be made of crystal, glass or solid iron.
  • The shape of a glass rod is similar to that of a drinking straw, that is, it is cylindrical.
  • There are two types, police rod and glass rod.

It is used to stir the solutes of a mixture in a solvent, either in the flask or beaker in order to promote the dissolution of the solute. It is usually used for low density liquids and solids.

It is also used to introduce highly reactive liquid chemicals through the runoff in order to avoid accidents.

It is also used during filtration in order to direct the liquid that is being filtered to the thickest area of ​​the filter paper.

The police rod is used to loosen the precipitate particles that have been stuck to the walls of the container when the filtration process is finished.

They are also used in biology laboratories to transfer tissue cells from a culture dish to a suspension.


There are automatic stirrers that replace the use of the glass rod, some are electric and others use electricity and magnetism to work.


It should be shaken with great care to avoid splashing the worktable.
