Granataria balance

Balances are essential in chemistry, physics and biology laboratories since they allow us to determine the mass of different objects and substances. The granataria scale is a type of high precision scale that allows us to weigh small quantities.

What is it?

It is a type of sensitive balance used to weigh small quantities and to determine the mass of objects and gases. Some have capacities of 2 or 2.5 kg and measure with an accuracy of up to 0.1 or 0.01 g. Although, you can also find some that measure 100 or 200 g with accuracies of 0.001 g.

It is used as an auxiliary measurement instrument because its precision is less than that of an analytical balance, it has a greater capacity than this and allows measurements to be made more quickly and easily.


The name of this scale refers to the three beams that make it up, including the middle beam, which is the largest, the front beam is medium, and the rear beam is the smallest. The difference in size between the beams indicates the difference in weights and the reading scale that each beam has.

The middle beam typically reads in 100g increments, the front beam measures 0-10g, and the rear can read 10g increments.

It is used to measure the mass directly of objects, to find the mass by difference of a liquid or gas, and to measure the quantity of a substance.

Parts of the granataria scale

The granataria scale has several parts:

Base: It is the lower part of the balance of the three beams. It is used to seek balance.

Saucepan: It is the part where the sample to be measured is placed.

Scale pointer: Indicates whether mass equality has been reached between the tray object and the mass of the beam.

Zero adjustment knob: It is used only when the balance is not zero at the beginning of the measurement. Used to adjust the scale pointer and align it to zero.

Beams: They are three bars that indicate between 0 and 10 grams, 10 grams and increments of 100 grams.

Riders: These are the sliding indicators used to indicate the mass in grams of the substance located in the pan.

How is it used?

In order to be used correctly, the balance must be level on a rigid surface, and it must be calibrated periodically and each time it is moved. To achieve this, standard masses are used that are calibrated with greater precision than that of the balance.

Substances should not be placed directly on the plate, but on a container.

To use a granataria scale you must follow the following steps:

  1. Before anything happens, look for zero in equilibrium. To do this, slide back all the weight balances. You will probably need to turn the zero adjustment knob to achieve the proper balance.
  2. Place the object on the platform. The pointer will move up and will not be located at zero.
  3. Slide the weight balances starting with the two heaviest weights and then use the light one to fine-tune the pointer indication and achieve balance. To do this you must move the 100 gram weight along the beam to the right until the indicator drops below the fixed mark. Next, you move the 10 gram indicator along the beam to the right until the indicator drops below the fixed mark. The lightest indicator is used to reach the equilibrium line.
  4. To read the weight, you just have to add the number in which each counterweight is located when the pointer was at zero. For example, if the heaviest counterweight is 100g, the next 40g, and the lightest 6.4g, then the total weight of the object is 146.4 grams.
