Height gauge, how to choose the best one?

The height gauge (also called dramil) is an instrument used for measurements and tracing , generally used in metrology and quality control laboratories . Its use is ideal for drawing on any part, be it axes of symmetry, machining excesses, drilling centers, among other things.

The height gauge has a combination of a main scale whose function is to make accurate and fast measurements; in addition to this, it has a single tracer which rests on a surface that acts as the reference plane used to perform measurements.

In the same way, it has a graduation in its main column where millimeters and centimeters can be noticed , and through which the tracer gauge slides, it is usually made of a hard and resistant metal. This caliper can be changed to a probe that allows you to calculate the parallelism or horizontality of flat surfaces.

Height Gauge Features

These characteristics can appear according to the construction of the calibrator and its type in some occasions; Each of them can determine a different operation and at the same time even give them different appearances, but to be clear, these are the main characteristics of the height gauges:

  • They are usually wide, wide and robust , this due to the fact that the granite surface they have is not integrated into its frame; thanks to this they give an appearance of being difficult to manipulate, however, as long as your column or main scale is kept in the correct position, the calibrator will work perfectly.
  • Most height gauges have the ability to adjust their main scale , so that it is easier to compensate for scriber wear and also zero for any possible reference point.
  • Both the base and the measuring surface are polished and sanded at the time of manufacture to give it a professional finish.
  • Each height gauge is chrome plated when made and the reason for this is to prevent the gauges from reflecting light when used outdoors.

All these characteristics are a common factor shared by all height gauges and make them as useful and industrialized a tool as it is; Thanks to this, the calibrators ask to function correctly and at the same time avoid inconveniences with their handling.

Types of height gauges

There are 4 types of height gauges, each with different functions that can be adapted to the needs of your buyers. Any of these models has a distinctive feature that makes it an indispensable tool; the types of height gauges are:

1. Height gauge with Vernier. This specific is the most widely used indoor, outdoor and depth linear height meter available on the market.

2. Dial gauge. This type of caliper replaces the traditional vernier and instead uses a dial to show the measurements that are taken and that can be read more quickly and efficiently.

3. Dial gauge and counter. Its operation in question at the readings is the same as in the dial gauge, with the difference that it has a system with an amplifier in the central pinion, amplifier gear and pinion indicator. The counter indicates fractions and the dial the measurements.

4. Electrodigital calibrator. This in turn can present two different types ; the first has two main columns and a rotary encoder that has the ability to shift; on the other hand, the second type has a single main column and the displacement it uses is of the capacitance type.

Precautions for Using a Height Gauge

When using this tool, it is necessary to take certain measures to avoid improper use or damage to both the device and itself. The first thing to consider when using this instrument is not to apply more force than necessary on the base , as this damages the accuracy of your measurements and therefore turns out to be ineffective.

Some parts such as the internal jaws or the depth probe are extremely delicate and fragile, so it is best not to use rough methods when handling these parts of the height gauge; Likewise, the tip of the tracer must be taken care of as it can break.

Regularly check that the precision remains the same; An easy way to carry out this test is through a standard block and measure it from time to time to check the efficiency.

Height gauges should be reviewed between periods of six months to two years, this also depending on their manufacture and quality to ensure that their use can be applied for a long time. The calibrator must be kept completely clean and dust must not accumulate on it.

How to use a height gauge?

The most important thing about height gauges is the way it works and how we can learn to do it. In itself, it is a simple process that must be practiced in order to do it correctly, and the previous precautions must also be taken into account to ensure that it is used in an ideal way.

The first step in using the calibrator is to take the main scale or column and move it with the main control to perform the measurement; After doing so, the external jaws must be adjusted on the object to be measured and it must be ensured that the jaws are not too tight since it can cause the measurement to be inaccurate. On the other hand, if it is a cylindrical object, check that the jaws are firmly held without exceeding the necessary force.

Then you can go on to contemplate the graduations of the measurements;  in the case of vernier height gauges, measurements as small as 0.05 mm can be contemplated .

The last step for the measurement is the measurement reading , it is read from the left right where it overlaps with the band of the main column, that way you can effectively obtain the measurement of the height you were looking for.
