Infrared Thermometer Functions And Uses

The  infrared thermometers , also called laser thermometers or pyrometers are measuring instruments noncontact temperature. They are mainly used in applications where it is not possible to access the substance to be measured by a conventional contact probe. This can be, for example, due to the danger involved in being near an object at a very high temperature, by moving machinery parts, by the presence of pollutants or because they are high-voltage electrical conductors, among others.

Likewise, it is a basic and essential instrument in any health center. Thanks to its extremely simple use, the thermometer is accessible to everyone.

Science increasingly allows people to heal themselves through more simplified technology for their use. Specialists have carried out research to improve the mechanics of this type of infrared or low resistance measuring devices, as well as to improve the calculation of temperature and the way to display it. Thanks to this research, technology in the world of health makes it possible to gain in ease of use, quality and precision.

As for the thermometer, the most practical, fast and accurate technology is infrared. In general, each body has infrared radiation that varies with temperature. What the thermometer does is measure these radiation and calculate the temperature. This same principle can be found in infrared cameras.

Professional Infrared Thermometer Functions

An infrared thermometer is made up of:

  • A sensor
  • An optical system
  • A calculation unit with algorithms

Specifically, the signal first passes through a lens located on the sensor. This signal is then amplified and transformed proportionally according to the power up to the temperature of the measured object.

Most   portable infrared thermometers also have a laser pointer that helps the user to more precisely define the exact point of the object to be measured. In some infrared thermometer models, there are two laser pointers that intersect at a certain distance, so that the two pointers are seen as a single point just at the most accurate distance of the infrared thermometer. Thus, the user who is taking the measurement can move the thermometer further or closer until it is at the optimal distance to take the temperature with the highest level of precision.

The advantage of this type of device is its remote operation, which avoids direct contact with the measured object and, in addition, allows the temperature of moving bodies to be measured. This is why infrared thermometers are often called  non-contact thermometers .

The non-contact technology is perfect for measuring the temperature of babies, even when they are sleeping, without the need to wake them up or cause discomfort.

What should you keep in mind when measuring non-contact temperature?

Note that non-contact thermometers are more accurate and sensitive. Any object that intervenes between the element to be measured and the thermometer is considered an obstacle and can interfere with the correct temperature reading.

Normally a surface temperature is always measured. It is an optical measurement method. The infrared thermometer must have a free view towards the object to be measured. Unlike visible light, infrared rays do not pass through glass. This means that it is not possible to measure with a conventional infrared thermometer through glass. It is also necessary to avoid dust or moisture on the meter lens, or between the meter and the object to be measured.

The Infrared Thermometer in the Industry

Industrial thermometers have been designed in most cases to measure a wide range of temperatures, even in extreme ranges that can range from -50 ° C (or even lower) to 1000 ° C or more. They are applied for a myriad of purposes, from cold rooms, to electrical installations, motors, furnaces, foundries, etc.

In these application contexts, industrial infrared thermometers have a limited degree of accuracy (the uncertainty margin between the actual temperature and the measurement), which does not exceed 2 or 3 ° C in most cases. If the person has, for example, 37 ° C of real temperature, the industrial infrared thermometer could well mark us between 34 and 40 ° C. For this reason, an industrial infrared thermometer is not suitable for measuring body temperature because it is not designed for it.

The Medical or Clinical Infrared Thermometer

Medical infrared thermometers are for the measurement of body temperature, they operate in a temperature range specifically oriented to the human body and that is located approximately between 32 and 43 ° C, with an accuracy of tenths of a degree (usually between 0.1 and 0.5 ° C), which allows a reliable measurement with a high degree of precision. This measurement is made without going through fabrics or materials such as clothing.

It is important to note that for this equipment to function optimally, the measurement must be made at the distance suggested by the thermometer manufacturer, which usually fluctuates between 5 to 15 cm in distance. If this distance is not respected, erroneous readings can be performed. In addition, the general recommendation is to always perform the measurement aiming at the head of the person, specifically, at the forehead . As a preventive measure, infrared body thermometers – unlike industrial models – lack a laser guide, as it could damage people’s vision.
