Laboratory Refrigerant Tube

The Laboratory Refrigerant Tube or also named, Condenser Tube , is a glass device that we find in the laboratory. This tube is what allows the gases to transform and release during the distillation process.

What is the laboratory refrigerant tube and what is it for?

The Refrigerant tube is easy to recognize because its design is quite different from other tubes found in the laboratory. This has two concentric cylinder-shaped tubes. The gas, in turn, will circulate through the conduit that is in the inner part of the tube and through the conduit of the outermost part, the refrigerant liquid will circulate.

In the conduit on the outside, we find two connections that are the ones that will allow us to attach hoses (usually rubber) for the entry and subsequent exit of the cooling liquid. We introduce the liquid, through one of the connections.
The water, which is used as a cooling liquid, must circulate constantly, so that in this way the temperature can be generated that allows the vapors to condense.

Characteristics and operation of the refrigerant pipe

✅The laboratory refrigerant tube is made up of two concentric cylindrical tubes.
✅The cooling liquid circulates through the tube on the outside, which is usually just water.
✅In turn, the steam to be condensed circulates through the tube on the inside.
✅In order that the refrigerant tube can be fitted to other glass artifacts, the inner ends of said tube are provided with ground glass at the joints.

Other important features

✅On the outside we find two connections and it is in them where we can adjust hoses, generally rubber to be able to introduce and release the cooling liquid.
✅The upper end can be left with an opening through a drying tube in order to prevent the entry of water or air.
✅The water used as a cooling liquid must be in constant circulation. In this way the desired temperature can be reached for the steam to condense.
✅It is not necessary too much coolant for proper cooling.

Laboratory Refrigerant Tube Uses

Refrigerant tubes or condenser tubes are used in reflux, where the vapors of a solvent that has been heated in a flask are cooled. This serves to reduce solvent loss and allows the mixtures to be heated for long periods of time.
Refrigerant tubes are used in distillation to cool hot vapors.

Different types of refrigerant pipes

Vigreux condenser or tube : It is a tube that is a modification of the air condenser. It is used as a fractionating column for fractional distillation.
Condenser or air tube : In this type of tube the heat of the liquid is diffused through the glass, and then it is cooled thanks to the air from outside.
Liebig condenser or tube : This is the simplest model, of the tubes that are cooled by water. The inside of this tube is straight.
Condenser or Dimroth tube : This tube has a double spiral inside for the cooling medium. In this way, both the inlet and outlet of the cooling liquid are at the top.

Other types of refrigerant tubes for laboratory

Condenser or Graham tube : This tube, also called a spiral condenser, has a spiral coil that runs the entire length of the tube.
Friedrichs condenser or tube : This tube is also called a spiral or coil condenser, and consists of a large internal spiral that is arranged inside a larger cylindrical capsule.
Allihn condenser or tube : Or also called reflux condenser or bulb condenser, it consists of a long glass tube. In order to increase the condensation of the steam, this tube has protrusions in the interior duct.

Why is the refrigerant tube so important?

Although all the  instruments that we find within a laboratory are of vital importance, since with them studies must be carried out. As for example, scientific discoveries, analysis and other various processes.

There is no doubt that there are some more important than others. The vital importance of some of these implements is that they cannot be replaced by any other within the laboratory. And there are others that can be, although it is not recommended.

The refrigerant tube is one of those indispensable and extremely important artifacts within the laboratory.
The condenser or refrigerant tube is very important and necessary if you need to transform steam into  liquid . Without a doubt, it cannot be absent from the laboratory.

Structure of the refrigerant tube for laboratory

The condenser tube or refrigerant tube has two tubes with a cylindrical shape. Frosted glass gaskets can be seen at both ends of the inner glass tube. These joints fulfill the function of being able to fit the tube with other glassware, if necessary.

An opening is left at the top or top of the tube or left open. This is done like this, so that the water does not enter. The outer tube generally has two connections where rubber or generally rubber hoses fit. Although they can also be neoprene.

The water (coolant) must be introduced through this hose. Said water can be from the tap without any kind of problem. Although many labs opt for chilled water with a mixture.

It is important that the coolant , which, as we already know, is usually water, must be kept constantly circulating, always in the opposite direction to the gases.
To make it clearer, the water that acts as a refrigerant must circulate contrary to the gases that are circulating in the condenser. In this way you can have the correct temperature to condense the vapor into liquid.

Generally, it is not necessary to increase the water flow to maintain the correct level of cooling.
