Laboratory Slides

November 2, 2021

The laboratory slide is one of the most popular, special and used pieces within any research laboratory , especially since it has a small and useful shape within experimental processes. According to experts, this piece is one of the smallest among the instruments used in laboratories.

In addition, it is necessary to know what it is for, what it is based on and how it works, since despite being simple, it has great utilities, thus becoming one of the most important pieces within the framework of observation and analysis of samples. .

What is a laboratory slide?

To better define what this instrument is about, we have to do it by describing the laboratory slide as a thin, transparent and small sheet on which the samples to be studied must be placed, especially when it comes to those that contain bacteria and tissues. . However, this slide does not work alone since to achieve its purpose, it must be used together with a microscope in order to analyze on a large scale everything that the instrument contains.

It is important to bear in mind that its use is professional, since the material in which it is created is capable of causing physical damage if used in an incorrect way, in addition to that to achieve a correct result, it is necessary that the samples be seal so that they do not shift.

Laboratory Slide Features

Not every small slide should be considered a laboratory slide, especially since this particular instrument has specific characteristics that make it quickly differentiate from others.

The main characteristics of the laboratory slide are the following:

  • The laboratory slide is an extremely thin transparent sheet that has a rectangular shape, usually always the same size: 75mm x 25mm.
  • Its manufactured products are glass, strong plastic and borosilicate, which together create a strong and solid sheet.
  • They generally do not arrive alone, since in order for the sample to be displayed as it should be, it needs to be sealed, so that the laboratory slide is accompanied by a coverslip.
  • It is necessary that these instruments are always kept in dry places, without humidity, since this completely influences the observation of the samples.

It must be placed on the microscope stage for complete analysis. Generally, it is often confused with the coverslip , although the two work together but their specialties tend to be different.

How does the laboratory slide work?

Unlike many other laboratory instruments, the slide is characterized by having a very simple and basic applied functionality, always requiring the hand of man since it is based on placing the sample on it, to then be sealed with the coverslip. and finally be placed on the stage of the microscope.

It is necessary that the sample is placed on the sheet in not too large quantities and with great care that it does not move, as well as it is necessary to be careful when sealing it. Once the slide is placed on the microscope stage, it must be held in place with the hooks on the sides of the instrument, otherwise the slide could shift and the sample would be lost.

There is also another way to place the sample on the slide, which is called wet mounting (the above process is known as dry mounting ), and is based on placing the sample on the slide and hydrating it with the relevant liquid. Each experiment and sample type will divide the type of setup to be used.

What is the laboratory slide for?

As we have already made clear in the previous section, the slide is a sheet that is basically used to observe samples under the deep lens of the microscope, so it is taken into account as simply a sample holder. However, it is important to highlight that it avoids any type of displacement in the sample and therefore, generates the beginning of various important studies, investigations and procedures.

Its results are perfect as long as it is used in the correct way, so it is recommended that a professional place the samples on the sheet. These instruments are commonly used in various laboratories, including those found in educational institutes.

What is the lab slide used for?

Although the laboratory slide is a slide and its use is quite particular, it is not limited to just one type of experiment, since it is as versatile as few instruments today, and they work wonderfully inside. from various fields such as biology, chemistry and the medicinal area.

To be more precise, in any laboratory in which observations are made through a microscope , the slides are necessary to achieve the analysis of the samples. Even in the medical field they are used at all times since they are used to analyze blood samples. After understanding this, it is established then that the uses of the laboratory slide do not tend to be limited at any time and are used whenever it is necessary to study any sample, whatever it is.

Types of laboratory slides

Although it is considered impossible that the laboratory slides are different and can be classified into types, in reality this does happen since its simplicity does not limit it to the same structure. Since the first sheet was created, until today, the changes have arisen as minimum as they are cataloged, so a certain variety is established.

The main types of laboratory slides are the following:

Plastic slides.

As its name indicates, this type of laboratory slide is created in a completely resistant plastic material since it needs to support the samples that are placed on it. They tend to be commonly used in student labs to prevent breakage.

Glass slides.

Unlike the previous one, this slide is created in totally transparent glass, in order to improve the quality of its results. They tend to be better known as glass slides as the material resembles on a large scale.

Borosilicate glass slide.

Although this type of sheet resembles the previous one because it is glass, it has the special characteristic of being created with different elements, which promises more quality, performance, results and durability.

Laboratory slides can also be classified according to their specialization , thus the following types are found:

Standard slides.

This type of slide tends to be the most common of all, since it has a rectangular shape that adapts to any microscope and helps to analyze any type of sample that is desired. They are the most basic and their costs tend to be affordable.

Slides with cavities.

This type of sheet is characterized by being thicker than the previous one, especially since its use is mainly intended for the study of materials in suspension.

Slide with colored lines.

As its name indicates, and although it is not completely transparent as normal, these slides are those that have some color bands that are used for the analysis of objects in chromatography.

Special slide.

These are sheets that are considered special since they have certain specific characteristics that determine them as direct for thick sample procedures.

Diagnostic slides.

As its name indicates, this type of sheet is one that is used to analyze samples in the health area, since those that contain antibodies and any other type of element that produce a specific pathology are placed on them.

Matte band slides.

Finally, there is the type of slide that has a matte band, as its name tells us, it is one of the ends of the slide, in order for the analysis of the samples to be more detailed and specific.
