Light meter, what is it and how to choose the right one?

November 2, 2021

The light meter , also known as an electric meter, was patented in 1881 and it used the electrochemical effect of current.

Although, as with all inventions, the light meter has been developing over time and is becoming more and more functional and there are even several types , each with its characteristics that differentiate it from the others.

Just think for a moment, what invention is wonderful? You could think for example of televisions or light bulbs , but realize that if it weren’t for the light meter then many of the incredible inventions we would not have right now; so we can realize the importance of your invention.

Now, let’s see what are the types of light meters that we have available today and other information that you will be interested in knowing.

Types of light meters

Although there are too many types of light meters or electrical measurement devices, below we will mention those that are most relevant for their uses and / or technology and therefore are better known.

Watt-hour meter

The watt-hour meter is responsible for measuring the amount of alternating current used by its users. This meter has contributed to the electricity grid not having such a high price.

Although, when we refer to the traditional watt-hour meter, we think of a disk that was spinning thanks to electromagnetic fields while a counter was in charge of recording the number of turns that said disk made.

Currently we will hear more about the digital meter, which although it has the same function as the traditional watt-hour meter is much more accurate and therefore is the most used.

Galvanometer

The galvanometer locates the electrical current by using ” coils of wire ” that are located on top of the base of a needle that is between one and another permanent magnet.

Ammeter

Surely at some point you have heard of this, which as its name suggests, is responsible for measuring the current in amperes .

Although there are also several types of ammeters, the most sought after is the digital ammeter.

Oscilloscopes

The oscilloscope shows the waveform of a varying voltage signal.

This type of meter is capable of graphing on a screen, in the form of a static line, repetitive signals taken by itself.

Voltage regulators

When we talk about a voltage regulator, we basically refer to a device that is responsible for keeping a record of the voltage , as its name indicates. These regulators use a transformer that allows them to handle the energy that comes through themselves.

Voltage regulators have a control panel from where you can easily set the way you want to put the regulator to work.

Digital light meter

Now, digital light meters are basically the evolution of traditional light meters, but these are known mostly as smart meters , and it is not for nothing, because their technology is much more advanced.

Digital electricity meters will allow us to keep track of our household electricity costs, so that we and the company can carry out an inspection of our fair electricity bill.

These meters do all the daily electricity registration in an approximate time of half an hour , and then send all that information to the operators of the company. At the end of the day, they are fairly reliable and accurate meters that help companies maintain good order.

A digital light meter is perfect for when we want to save energy and therefore money.

Smart meters are made up of these parts:

  • Reading screen.
  • Consumption indicator.
  • Lock button.
  • Serial identification.

How do digital light meters communicate?

First, these meters can communicate through the same smartphones , where the meter will be responsible for sending all the daily information.

And second, there is also another way, which is through radio waves bouncing the records from the meter to another, to finally transmit them at a specific access point.

Said access point is commonly placed on the street posts of the house, so that they transmit the data to the meter company.

How the digital light meter works

We will know the operation of the digital light meter according to some lights that it has integrated and that indicate different things, let’s see it below:

  • Light off : no power supply.
  • Light flashing : Power is on.
  • Flashing at high speed : Power consumption exploded.
  • Red light : The power is much higher than the contracted one and therefore the electricity supply will be interrupted.

Likewise, each color of light means something:

  • Flashing green : Everything OK.
  • Static green : A pay period has started.
  • Red : There was a disconnection.
  • Orange : The system has failed.

Digital light meter benefits

Digital light meters are highly beneficial both for ourselves and for the companies that present such a service. Among the benefits of this device we have:

  • They allow us to control much more the energy consumed.
  • Thanks to its advanced technology, each user can understand and adapt to their way of operating.
  • We can save money .
  • Due to all the access that the user has to their energy, they will know from the beginning that the company is not taking their money and they will feel more security.
  • Businesses also save money by being able to read electricity records from their electronic operators.

Really, the energy efficiency that digital light meters provide is remarkable and very beneficial.

Now that you know everything about light meters, their functions and benefits, I don’t think you have any doubts that you need one at home. Go right now to investigate which are the best companies that offer this service and ask for yours at once, start saving energy and money from your pocket.
