Luxmeter, what is it, use and price?

November 2, 2021

The distribution and intensity of lighting are two influential elements in safety and work performance. For this, we have the lux meter , a tool that allows finding the best lighting conditions within an interior space.

Thanks to this instrument it is possible to measure in a short time and without much effort the real and non-subjective luminosity of a specific space . The luxmeter has a photoelectric cell which absorbs light that is then transformed into electrical impulses. These are interpreted by the team and reflected through a needle accompanied by a scale of lights.

The amount of light that reaches a space per air unit is known as illuminance. This is measured with the prefix lux. It is necessary to know that 1 lux equals 1 lumen per square meter .

What is a lux meter?

The luxmeter is the appropriate measuring instrument to measure the level of illumination in a given space. The more light energy there is in the environment, the greater the electrical energy used by the equipment to demonstrate the illuminance through the screen.

Having a quantifiable and accurate measurement of light is of utmost importance if accurate results are to be expected when conducting daily studies, as well as in individual investigations.

Situations such as measuring the amount of light on a specific surface within the work environment, as well as checking for adequate lighting in emergency exits, make light measurement and analysis of utmost importance. As a result, efficiency and safety can be guaranteed. The only way to make these measurements accurately is by using a lux meter , the only specialized tool for measuring light intensity.

Where is it used?

Thanks to the lux meter it is possible to know how much illumination exists within any space . It can be a laboratory, classrooms, work rooms, buildings, theaters, and even outdoors. At the same time, it is a very useful instrument when it comes to the conservation of valuable objects such as those exhibited in a museum.

Nowadays it is very normal to hear about the lux meter. This is usually used in multiple areas of daily life, to be able to know exactly the light situation of different spaces, such as industrial, business and commercial. This can approach any office or workspace and determine that the brightness is correct for efficient work.

A quick example is products in stores, which must be illuminated with a certain lux value to give the best optical impression on consumers.

How does the Luxmeter work?

The operation of the lux meter is very simple, so its explanation will be easy for you to understand. This instrument depends on a compound circuit which, upon receiving a certain amount of light, transforms it into current, sending it through the circuit to the needle on the screen that shows the amount of light in space.

To obtain the best performance from the lux meter, it is necessary to follow a series of steps:

  1. To begin, you must take the luxmeter and point the photoreceptor (which is the one who absorbs the light) and place it in front of the light that you want to measure.
  2. The lux meter reader should then be looked at and adjusted to the appropriate scale. It all depends on how strong or weak the light is being measured.
  3. After making the adjustment, it is time to press the power button on the reader.
  4. Wait until the reading appears, it may take a few seconds.
  5. Once the reading is displayed, the result must be multiplied by the number of the scale that was selected. For example, if the selected scale is 200 lux and the result was 40, then the value would be: 40 × 200 = 8000.

The luminous value of a determined point is obtained through the sensor contained in the luxmeter. Thanks to this, it is possible to determine if the natural or artificial light perceived by the tool is coupled to the minimum values required for its conservation.

Various uses of the lux meter

Today the most widely used lux meter is the digital one. This instrument has a software- driven technology that allows data obtained on the luminosity of different areas to be stored in a list . Thanks to this feature and many more, this model replaces the old analog version.

One of the most common uses of the lux meter is within the world of photography and cinematography . Thanks to this device, videographers can calibrate the depth of field and speed of field to achieve the highest possible quality in the shots. It is also very useful when a permanent brightness is required on the screen and to record scenes where it is necessary to have different levels of light.

Likewise, the lux meter plays an important role at times when it is essential to comply with certain security measures. It can be used inside an interior space to check if there is adequate light that allows certain activities to be carried out without affecting vision . In the branch of meteorology, the lux meter is used to measure the luminosity of the sky and calculate how much light the ground receives in cities, fields, greenhouses and forests.

Types of lux meter

As of today, a wide range of lux meters can be found on the market. These range from basic designs to the most sophisticated and complete. However, it is worth noting that the most used today are the digital type. These have the ability to measure natural and artificial light.

It is normal that these light measurement instruments evolve over time. To such an extent they do that there are recent models that allow the storage of data that you can review later and compare with data obtained in other spaces. The types of lux meter are:

Digital lux meter

In addition to measuring the intensity of light in the open air, the digital lux meter also allows to measure the luminosity in internal spaces such as laboratories, buildings, theaters, halls, among others. Its working range goes from 0 to 100,000 lux and has an automatic scale change. You can also perform minimum and maximum average measurements , holding the desired value. In addition, it has a memory where you can store measurements according to date, time and place.

Mavolux & move monitor

This model is ideal for use within a photographic studio or in the film industry. With it you can make precise measurements of short distance indoors and outdoors. If you need to measure larger distances, you need to adapt an accessory.

Multifunction

It is a quite peculiar and complete luxmeter since it brings together various types of meters in a single device.

PCE-UV34

This is a special lux meter as it is specifically used to measure the intensity produced by ultraviolet light radiation .

Light meters are generally not large in size, so they can be used at different points in a given space. Thanks to them , lighting methods can be configured to optimally use natural light and at the same time make the lighting conditions the best for carrying out a specific task in a given space.

Features of the Luxmeter

Based on the amount of light that needs to be measured, the lux meter can offer various measurement scales. Thanks to this it is possible to have a more precise measurement in case the light intensity is stronger or weaker. Each model of luxmeter has the following characteristics:

  • It is an easy-to-carry tool, its size makes it portable.
  • It has a silicon, selenium sensor, among others. The spectral response of these sensors is equal to human vision.
  • It has different resolutions, sample rates, precision, ranges, and response.
  • They carry a separate or integrated sensor which provides access to exceptional perspectives.
  • It is capable of measuring low levels of luminosity. This is possible thanks to its automatic zero adjustment.
  • You can store the maximum values in the obtained data.

Every luxmeter has a photoreceptor, this allows you to know the intensity of light, transforming it into electrical energy. This energy is transported to the reader, who receives the signal sent by the photoreceptor which then transforms it into a measure of light to finally display it on the screen.

Why is the lux meter important?

In almost all industrial processes it is necessary to have lighting in accordance with the workspace . Low light can cause damage to the worker’s eyesight , ranging from a simple condition such as eyestrain to more acute damage such as retinal burn.

If the light level is too low, people will have to strain their eyes, causing dry and tired eyes. In the short term, this will interfere with the correct performance of the tasks . Otherwise, when the light level is too high, it can also cause serious problems. In addition to causing glare, it can also end up burning the retina and causing long-term blindness.

Therefore, to avoid these problems, the use of a lux meter is recommended. This light measurement instrument will help to find the necessary light flux for any workspace . As a result, long-term visual problems will be avoided, protecting the health of all the people who intervene in a certain space.
