Currently we are in a society where more attention is paid to the things that affect us at first glance, without taking into account others that, although not palpable, have been affecting a significant number of people, such as acoustics. which is considered as a type of contamination.

For this reason, every day the number of companies and administrations that have been busy implementing noise meters increases , which will be the subject to be discussed below. And it is that we all live surrounded by noise, but there are levels so high that they end up harming those who are subjected to them.

What is a noise meter?

It is an instrument that is used, as its name indicates, to measure the intensity or level of noise present in a certain place. The sound level meter is the noise meter par excellence, which dates from approximately 1830. The unit expressed to measure the intensity of noise is the decibel.

It is important to rule out that, according to the World Health Organization, the noise level that the human ear is able to tolerate without altering health is 55 decibels . This sound level will of course depend on certain factors such as the type of noise, the distance at which the person is exposed to the source of the sound, and the length of time the person is exposed to it.

Noise meters can be used in different environments, such as, for example, to measure the noise of burners in heating installations, in machinery within industries or workshops, in events; Likewise, as in the case of complaints within a residential area, the basic values ​​can be measured to avoid damages.

Importance of using a noise meter

The fact of being exposed to noise on a daily basis is something normal in everyone’s life, however, when the intensity of noise is high and the duration to which a person is exposed to high levels of noise is prolonged, it ends up damaging the health not only at the auditory level, but to the rest of our body. This is because it can trigger problems such as stress, aggressiveness, insomnia , among others.

For this reason, it is important to use noise meters, to know exactly the level of noise present in a certain area and to know whether or not it can cause damage to the hearing system. Once the exact values ​​have been obtained, the necessary measures can be taken to minimize the noise emission. 

As indicated above, the noise level can harm people’s health, regardless of the sound source; Since, if the noise comes from machines, appliances, or simply human voices, it will not make any difference.

According to studies, the sound level suitable for the human ear ranges from approximately 55 to 85 decibels, however, this varies according to the environment where the person is, since if for example the noise meter indicates 70 decibels (dB) in a mechanical manufacturing plant, the value is considered to be minimal; and on the contrary, if this same value is presented in offices, it would be alarming, since in this type of environment it is considered that it would be an extremely high value; It is in these types of actions that the importance of using a noise meter lies.

Types of sound level meter

Currently there are three types of sound level meters, which are:

  • Class 0 sound level meter. They are used only within laboratories to obtain reference levels.
  • Class 1 sound level meter. Through this it is possible to carry out field work with precision and in a meticulous way.
  • Class 2 sound level meter . With this type of meter, general measurements are carried out in field work.
  • Class 3 sound level meter. It is considered that this is the one with the lowest precision since through it it is possible to obtain approximate measurements, therefore, it is usually used only to carry out surveys.

There is another type of noise meter that does not fall within this classification because it is a derivative of the sound level meter; this is the dosimeter, which offers a sound pressure level (which is the function performed by the sound level meter) taking into account the exposure time. The dosimeter is generally used to calculate the hazards of loud sound exposure as a percentage of the maximum time allowed in an 8-hour workday.

Parts that make up a noise meter

Regardless of the type of noise meter that is studied, all basically have the following parts:

  • Microphone. By means of this, the sound pressure variations are converted into variations that are equivalent to electrical signals. They all generally have a frequency response of 8 Hz (Hertz) to 22 kHz (kHz stands for Hertz or Hertz, which is the unit of frequency according to the international system of units).
  • Circuit. Through this, any signal that is emitted is processed.
  • Reading unit. It is where the mediations taken in real time are recorded. They can be LED screens, digital screens or vumeters (it is a device present in audio equipment, where the signal level expressed in volume units is indicated; also known as a volume indicator).
  • Jack connector. It is generally located on the side, it is a kind of outlet whose function is to be connected to an oscilloscope; the latter is a tool that allows electronic visualizations expressed in graphs.

In addition to these parts, every noise meter has a series of accessories such as calibrators, tripods, windshields, extenders, power supplies, carrying cases, and filters.
