Ohmmeter, what is it and how to choose it at the best price?

History of Ohmmeter

To begin we must know that the person who invented this instrument is named after George Simon Alfred Ohm, this being the German physicist who created Ohm’s Law. He himself stated that the electrical current output that passes through a conductor corresponds to the difference in voltage. This being inversely equal to the resistance of the current flow.

As regards the date of creation of this instrument, it is currently not known exactly. But the probability is that it happened before Ohm’s Law was elaborated We must add that before the German physicist Ohm will create his law.

A name that stands out for his studies on electricity and voltage is Cavendish, a Briton who carried out various types of studies. Among which we find the experiment with the Leyden bottle. But he did not get to publish his studies.

By the nineteenth century there were not many tools that allowed to measure electricity, voltage and other aspects. In fact, many of the devices that were at that time were not reliable enough. So George Simón Alfred Ohm decided to modify the existing ones in order to carry out his experiments.

Thanks to the modifications applied to Ohm himself, I can continue his research, which led him to develop what is currently known as Ohm’s Law.

What is the Ohmmeter?

When we talk about an Ohmmeter, we refer to a device with which electrical resistance can be measured. That is, the unit of measurement that corresponds to Ohms. It is a laboratory material that uses a galvanometer, this being an electric current meter.

Specifically, we can say that this is a device that works like a transducer, which receives the electric current and causes alterations in a pointer. With which we can know the measure accordingly. It is a meter with which we can determine the current flowing through the resistance and identify it.

Ohmmeter Features

To know how an Ohmmeter works correctly, we must know what its characteristics are, at least the simplest so as not to have problems when using it. Keep in mind that this instrument may seem complicated at first, but in reality it is not. Regarding its characteristics, this instrument has;

  • Terminals ; The terminals are made up of wires and metal tips. Being those that carry out voltage transmission and allow measurement.
  • Needle ; Being present only in the case that it is an analog type Ohmmeter, and it is in charge of giving the result of its measurement.
  • Function selector ; In this case we are talking about the section handle that allows us to take the functions we need for the resistance measurement process.
  • LCD screen ; In this case, the LCD screen is only found in the digital ohmmeters, being here where the measurement results are shown.
  • Measuring tips ; A measurement tip is known as a part of the Ohmmeter where you place what you want to measure. These are made up of two cables, one of them being positive and the other negative.

With regard to its other characteristics such as size, this may vary. Although they are not usually very large, since they are much easier to transport. At the same time we can say that its appearance also varies depending on the Ohmmeter model.

What is the Ohmmeter for?

As we have been mentioning, this instrument works to determine what the resistance is. Thanks to it, we are able to determine if an appliance is presenting any type of failures. Which are fundamental in the process of creating circuits.

We must bear in mind that this instrument has the ability to measure all resistances so it is extremely useful. With regard to the places where these instruments are used, we have to work on electrical circuits. To later measure the resistance values.

Due to this we can say that its use is extended to multiple places such as the office, industries, laboratories and even in homes. As we mentioned, it can be used to carry out repairs to electrical devices such as speaker coils or ceramic rifles.

How does the Ohmmeter work?

An Ohmmeter is not an instrument that should be used without any kind of knowledge, as it can cause measurement problems. To begin we must know the language that the machine uses or you will not be able to use it correctly.

Specifically, we can say that their measurements are made in volts. But this is when it comes to intensity and ohm that corresponds to resistance. At the same time we find the ampere that is used to measure the number of electrons.

With regard to putting the device to work, we must put its terminals in a short circuit. To then set the needle indicating the measurement to “0”. The power is then disconnected, as this instrument provides the electrical current. This step is important as it can cause disturbances in the Ohmmeter’s performance.

How to configure an Ohmmeter?

An important point when it comes to using the Ohmmeter is knowing how to set them. In the case that we have an automatic type, we only have to adjust to the ” Ohm ” position . On the other hand, when it is not automatic, we must place it in the lowest position.

To all this it is likely that we should adjust the scale, when this happens we must make sure we are at a point when the values ​​remain stable. This is important so that they are at a detectable resistance level.

Ohmmeter Types

Ohmmeters are very diverse devices, so we can find a wide variety of types on the market. This is understandable, since each of them is intended to perform different types of measurements. In relation to the different types of Ohmmeter that exist we have;

Precision Ohmmeter

In this case we are talking about a type of Ohmmeter that has four terminals. Where two of them allow to carry the current from the meter to the resistance. While the other two terminals generate the result of the measurement of the voltage between the terminals.

Analog ohmmeter

It is an ohmmeter that has a needle to indicate the result of the measurement taken. It must be taken into account that in these cases the level is defined in the Ohms scale.

With regard to this instrument we must indicate that this device tends to lose a lot of calibration. However, this is something that can be easily fixed. To do this we must use a flat tool and move the calibration screw to the right or left.

It is important to bring the needle to zero, we must mention that this screw is in most cases in the axis of the needle.

Extreme precision ohmmeter

In this case we are talking about a type of ohmmeter that is characterized by having better accuracy, but also by being much more sophisticated. We must indicate that this device does not have batteries, since they have been changed by a circuit, which allows to form a current with constant intensity. Thanks to this, we are able to circulate through resistance.

Digital Ohmmeter

Finally we have a digital ohmmeter that is one of the most useful, especially when compared with the analog one since it has a greater precision than the analog. In this case it does not have a needle, with which the measurement is indicated, but it has an LCD screen .

It is on this screen that we can see the results of the medication. It must be taken into account that this instrument has certain characteristics that prevent personal injury. But it also allows you to keep the equipment fully functional, in case it is used improperly.

It is important that when selecting one of these devices we make sure that they comply with current safety regulations. It must be borne in mind that although these are more complex. They allow us to get work done quickly, easily and safely.
