Porcelain triangle

In the laboratory, heating of substances and quantitative analysis of substances are common. In these processes the porcelain triangle is used, an instrument made of porcelain and wire that serves to hold other laboratory materials such as flasks, porcelain crucible or beakers to heat them.

What is it?

It is a laboratory instrument used in the heating of substances. It is also used to hold crucibles when they are heated for ash analysis.

In these cases, the porcelain triangle is placed on the metal ring on the universal bracket. It supports the porcelain crucible and calcination is carried out on a filter paper containing a precipitate. Calcination is necessary when performing a quantitative analysis of the ash.


It is made up of three sections of galvanized wire arranged in a triangular shape. On each edge of the triangle is a porcelain tube.

The ends of the galvanized wires twist and form three rods that are projected out of each corner of the triangle.

How is it used?

  • To use it, it must be supported on a metal ring attached to the universal support. Underneath the lighter is placed at a suitable distance.
  • It is important to ensure that the crucible fits properly in the triangle and that it does not fall through it. The same procedure applies to flasks or beakers. If possible, check for proper size before mounting.
  • Once the assembly is secure, the lighter is lit following all the safety measures and the process is carried out.
  • If you are doing an ash analysis, it is important that you preheat the crucible to remove any possible traces of moisture that it may have before the analysis process as it can alter the results.
