It is best defined as one of the most important measuring instruments of all, especially as it is highly needed in research and industry procedures. Its cost can vary and its structure also, however, it is capable of having similar characteristics since it yields the necessary results in any way.

Its importance lies in the fact of being able to use it in the correct places and in the correct way, since otherwise its use would be wasted . In a common way, professionals use the roughness tester in order to know what the state of pieces of any type is, so that they can determine the final result of the construction.

What is the roughness meter?

Despite the fact that a surface looks perfect enough to the naked eye, it always has a lower level of roughness , which is common. Therefore, in the field of physics the roughness meter is constantly used, so that this level is established in numbers and the corresponding processes are carried out.

According to experts, a roughness is nothing more than what its name explains: any type of irregularity and unevenness on a surface or perforation.

Roughness Meter Features

As it is a device that is precise and adequate enough to know the level of roughness of any type of perforation and surface, it is common for it to have a large number of characteristics that allow it, so here we leave the most relevant ones :

  • Despite being a device that at first glance can be classified as heavy and difficult to carry, it is actually quite practical and has a very comfortable size that allows the precision of the calculation through a sensor.
  • It does not usually arrive individually, since it requires other elements that sometimes tend to be necessary for better results. These elements added with a caliper, a protector and a briefcase inside which it is secured.
  • In addition to the above, it has a charger since the device works quickly with a rechargeable battery.
  • DIN standards are those that maintain all aspects of roughness in law, in accordance with their physical specifications. The roughness tester is based on these standards and provides accurate and optimal results.
  • It is not necessary for the device’s sensor to be placed directly on the surface, since it works at full speed to capture the results within millimeters of it.
  • If a detailed analysis is required, this device allows the results to always be kept in its memory and transferred to any computer in order to analyze them and fill in a record.

Despite being a complex device, it has the main characteristic of being easy to use . It is considered complex due to the number of parts it has, among which the screen, the transducer, the filters, the head and the sensor stand out.

How does the roughness meter work?

The mode of operation of the roughness tester is quite simple, especially since it has a comfortable and compact size. In itself, what happens is that this device tends to give the results in microns that are expressed according to various parameters: arithmetic roughness (Ra) , median roughness (Rz) , total roughness (Rt) and square roughness (Rq) .

In order to carry out all these measurements, what the roughness meter does is that it starts up all its interior elements and detects the corresponding irregularities, starting from the sensor that is near the surface to be studied.

The values ​​shown on the screen are correct and are shown in microns, so only an expert will be able to understand the level of roughness found on the analyzed surface.

What is the roughness meter for and what are its uses?

As we have mentioned, the roughness meter helps us, specifically, to study the level of roughness that may exist on a surface or perforation , regardless of whether said surface is perfect with the naked eye. Thanks to the fact that it is a device capable of measuring this detail that few instruments achieve, it is characterized by being highly necessary in industrial processes and within the metrological field.

To define on a large scale the uses of the roughness tester , below we make a short list of the main ones:

  • The ridges and valleys, in general, always have various imperfections that are impossible to observe before the eyes of man, so a roughness meter is used in order to determine what they are.
  • In the same way it happens with the perforations, which always have roughness and these must be analyzed with the measuring instrument, since it allows to carry out a quantification of the same.
  • In the case of mechanical parts, this instrument is not far behind, since it also manages to measure the roughness of these parts, which is necessary in various procedures. This is because through the level of roughness, it is possible to determine what are the levels of wear that exist in a part, as well as its level of wear.
  • In laboratories around the world, the roughness meter is also used as a class part, since it allows the measurement in numbers of the roughness of various surfaces.

Types of roughness meters

Nowadays, there is a large number of roughness meters that are usually divided according to their elements and details, especially when it comes to their functionalities since they all give the correct results, the difference lies in how they achieve it.

The main types of roughness meters are the following:

Contact roughness meter.

These devices are those that are characterized by having a probe, which is a point that tends to be approached directly towards the surface that is being studied. This probe is capable of having fast sensors that show the results on the screen in a few seconds.

Non-contact roughness tester.

Unlike the previous one and as its name indicates, this type of roughness meter is one that does not require a probe to come into contact with the surface, but rather works with a laser that analyzes the entire area to be studied and finally throws the correct results.

According to the type of probe , the types of roughness are classified as follows:

Inductive probe roughness tester.

This type of roughness meter is characterized by working with an inductive probe, which in other words means that it moves in a certain specific way, changing the entire magnetic field of the area, generating an electrical signal that will finally yield the correct results.

Roughness tester with capacitive probe.

On the other hand, there is this type of roughness meter which is characterized by moving vertically without exception, since it carries out the capacitor change process and sends the correct signals to achieve the results.

Roughness meter with piezoelectric probe.

This type of roughness meter earns its name since it generates a change in terms of all the piezoelectric product of the surface to be studied, so that in the end it produces the adequate electrical signal to receive the correct results.

Roughness tester with mechanical pad.

As its name indicates, this type of roughness tester is one that has the ability to find all surface imperfections as the skate slides over it.

Electrical filtering roughness meter.

In this case, this type of roughness meter is the one that is responsible for collecting the correct data while at the same time eliminating any type of ripple and unnecessary data found.

Mixed roughness meter.

Finally, there is the type of roughness meter that is capable of combining various previous characteristics, thereby obtaining a more precise and optimal result. Currently, it is considered one of the most evolved options on the market.
