As we evolve as a society, it has become necessary to invent instruments or tools in the area of ​​electronics, so that they help in one way or another to obtain more precise and optimal results in this area.

In the world of electronics we talk about a series of elements that, although they are similar to each other, each one has its function. In this case, we will talk about the voltage meter , which in a general way can be defined as an instrument to evaluate electric current .

To talk about a voltage meter, obviously one must investigate the concept of what voltage is, which is nothing more than the electrical magnitude that is exerted on electrons within a closed electrical circuit.

The voltage is represented by the symbol “V”, constituting the unit of measurement that is the volt. It is named after the physicist Alesandro Volta , who is the creator of the electric battery, later called the voltaic battery.

Now, to measure the power of the voltage between two points (which we all know as positive and negative) within a circuit, an instrument dating from the early nineties, called a voltmeter , is implemented .

Importance of the voltage meter

A voltage meter has been an extremely important instrument for many years. Through this, it is possible to obtain knowledge about electrical capacity such as potential, charge, energy; or characteristics such as resistance and capacity within an electrical circuit. This is used in everyday life to review, check and / or locate the failure of an electrical device , which is impossible to palpate with the naked eye.

Classification of a voltage meter

When talking about the different classes of voltage meters, voltmeters are mentioned, which have evolved over time and are listed below:

  • The analog voltmeter : it is the simplest of all, the galvanometer is par excellence the component of this type of instrument. Its main characteristic is that it is encapsulated in a transparent structure, it has a needle inside , which runs through a series of values ​​or volts. This type of meter is preferred when working on platforms with flammable gases , since as they are not electronic they have less possibility of causing an explosion. Another advantage is that when there are readings that fluctuate between one and another, the needle will constantly move until it reaches the exact value, especially when it is low frequency.
  • The digital voltmeter : the measurements are observed on a screen with digital characteristics; In this type of meter, the reading is generated through a computer and later displayed on an LCD screen. Unlike the previous type of meter, when fluctuations occur between one value and another, it is not able to represent said variation, instead, it can give an error or calculate a certain reading. However, it is more accurate as it is electronic, and of course its reading is fast, unlike the first one. Likewise, they have a high cost, compared to the first.
  • Electromagnetic voltmeter : this type of meter is largely made up of a galvanometer, in which a gradual scale of volts is represented.
  • Vector voltmeter – this is the least popular, they are used as a microwave signal voltage meter.

Operation of a voltage meter

For those who are hobbyists or work daily with electronics, measuring voltage is easy and common. When using a voltage meter it is essential to know if the voltage is alternating or direct current; After this point is clear, we proceed to select in the meter the option to measure the alternating or direct voltage according to the type of current.

Subsequently, it begins with the badly high voltage indicated on the meter and decreases until it gets closer to the most exact data.

It should be noted that if the voltage to be measured is an alternating current, the meter can be plugged in in either direction; On the other hand, if it is of direct current, the positive side and the negative side must necessarily be connected in a corresponding way.

Recommendations for its use

A voltage meter is an instrument that, due to its characteristics, tends to be delicate and can be damaged if misused; for example, using a voltmeter to measure small amounts of current to try to measure a large pressure. As well as using a meter designed for the measurement of large voltages to calculate small quantities. Take into account that in these cases, even if the measuring instrument is not damaged, the readings will not be exact.

It is extremely important that when using a voltage meter, some kind of protection is placed on the hands , or at least ensure that the fingers are not bare when touching any of the terminals, since this could cause that the person is electrocuted.

Likewise, when working especially with an analog type voltmeter, it is important to note that the mixture of positive and negative connections can cause damage to the instrument.

Regardless of the type of voltage meter that you choose to use, depending on what the case is and what you need to do (either measure voltages, measure direct current, measure continuity, resistance, measure transistors and / or measure batteries) and which It is more convenient at the discretion of the person, they all basically fulfill the same function, being very useful when it comes to repairing an appliance in our home, and finally checking whether or not said repair turned out as expected.

It is by means of this instrument that an electrician, worker or the person who knows how to manipulate the instrument, can have the knowledge of the extent to which an electrical circuit fulfills the function for which it is intended; or in this case, check if there is any problem that prevents the electrical voltage from not reaching what is expected.
