Smart bulbs, what are they and what benefits do they bring?

November 2, 2021

Do you want to know what smart bulbs are? Smart lighting is here to stay, as it represents a much simpler and more comfortable option when controlling and personalizing home lighting . This thanks to the fact that it can be done from voice commands, from the mobile or through domestic connectivity.

With this in mind, it is not surprising that more and more people are interested in buying smart bulbs in order to have a better lighting experience in their homes.

In addition to that we must bear in mind that smart lighting systems have ended up being one of the best alternatives to save energy and take the first step towards smart homes .

In this sense, connectivity becomes a fundamental part of how smart lighting works. This is because it connects very easily with different devices, including home security systems, making it easier for owners to create smart spaces.

What are smart bulbs?

To ensure that there is no doubt in this regard, we are going to start by explaining that smart bulbs are LED bulbs that have the ability to be customized and controlled remotely , being able to be through voice commands or from an app on our mobile.

That is why on many occasions we can see that these types of bulbs are compatible with assistants such as Alexa, the Google Assistant and other smart home assistants, and can even be controlled through smart routines.

Smart bulbs, through smart assistants, can communicate with other smart devices that we have in the home, whether they are training systems and other devices.

How do they work?

Although there are a large number of different models on the market, we can say that these work in one of the following two ways:

  • Through a WiFi internet connection
  • Through a network connection with another device by Bluetooth connection

In some cases the bulbs give us both options to use the one that best suits our needs.

The connectivity of smart bulbs allows us to turn them on and off through an application or voice control, and in many cases we can also customize the color and intensity.

What devices are they compatible with?

As we have already anticipated, the vast majority of smart bulbs work using WiFi or Bluetooth connectivity . This means that it is not necessary to have a smart home center or a smart assistant, but we can easily configure it using a mobile application.

Similarly, smart bulbs can be very easily connected to home concentrators and these can give us better performance, allowing the bulb to work in tandem with different smart devices within the same space.

What are the advantages of smart bulbs?

There are a good number of advantages that should be taken into account, since initially these are more expensive than fluorescent and normal LEDs , but in reality this is because smart bulbs offer many more features , which end notably offsetting that increase in price.

One of the most outstanding advantages of these bulbs is that they are an excellent option for energy saving , in addition to having a much longer life compared to other bulbs. These are just some of the main advantages, but now we are going to go into more detail about all the advantages that they can offer us:

  • Longer useful life : the incandescent bulbs that we can buy have a useful life that goes from 750 hours to 2,000 hours. On the other hand, LED smart bulbs offer us a useful life of between 35,000 to 50,000 hours, so they work for much longer.
  • They consume less energy : one of the great advantages of LED or CFL smart bulbs, compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, is that they allow us to significantly reduce the amount of electricity we need to light a room. In the case of smart bulbs that have ENERGY STAR certification, we can be talking about up to 70% to 90% less energy consumption.
  • Lighting customization : One of the most striking features of smart lighting is that it can be customized to change color , which makes it very easy and effective to change the mood in a room by taking advantage of different settings. From warm and relaxing lighting to lively lighting for a gathering.
  • Configuration of the use of light : either in our house or in our business, when using fixed lights with smart bulbs we can preset them so that they turn on automatically when we return to our home or that they turn off or dim at a certain time of the night when we are generally asleep.
  • Increased security : some smart bulbs include motion sensors , which means that they turn on when they detect movement and turn off when no one is in the room. In some cases, this function can be programmed to send an alert to our mobile device when it detects movement, either indoors or outdoors. So they can be a good option to improve our security.

As you can see, smart bulbs really have a number of very striking advantages or benefits compared to conventional bulbs, so the fact that they are more expensive really ends up being more than justified.

You should also bear in mind that there are different types of smart lighting, where most work through bulbs enabled for a WiFi and Bluetooth connection, with smart switches and plugs that complete the smart lighting environment within our home.

The type of smart lighting that best suits you will depend on your specific needs, since in some cases it may be necessary to make some modifications to the existing electronic system, although most smart bulbs alone do not require any changes.
